Painting on Liberty

In his great essay, On Liberty, John Stuart Mill makes what is often considered the classic case for individual liberty and yet, simultaneously, presents convincing arguments for government intervention. The problem of social ethics for Mill was to separate the legitimate sphere of individual liberty from that of collective authority. Liberty is a valuable means to the more highly valued end of progress –in which every member of society has an interest.

In my paintings I try to solve the same question, separate the legitimate sphere of individual liberty from that of art authority.
