ARTIST STATEMENTPainting is the physical act of translating into form something that is limitless. Memories combine with an abstracted natural environment to create something new. I am fascinated with the drama of nature. Light dances and reflects off flower petals as they move in the breeze. Dramatic backdrops of changing skies layer with botanical elements. Multi-layered surfaces mix with the drawn and painted lines dredging up subconscious imagery. Softened brushstrokes beneath the surface create a history, a story that unfolds and draws the viewer in. Abstracting the subject matter allows my own personal reflection into the work. When I let go of control, the process takes the painting to a level where intuitive responses and improvisation play a part. Personal ideas that began the painting are let go, as the surface is built up to reveal a serene contemplative space. Symbolic shapes are buried within the paint and then reemerge transformed. By revealing a deep inner search an object of beauty is created that transcends the order of the ordinary world.
